Match Description:

Korean Olympic Dream Still Alive
Korea kept alive their Olympic qualifying dream when they downed Venezuela 3-1 in the men's World Cup of Volleyball at Site B in Hamamatsu.

The Asians triumphed 25-21, 25-22, 23-25, 26-24 for their third win in five matches while Venezuela remain in the hunt for their first victory in their debut World Cup.

The match was a classic battle of styles; the fast-paced Koreas against the power of the young Venezuelans and in the end it was the efficient defense and experience of the Asians that shone through.

After exchanging side outs for most of the opening set, Korea kept their composure when it mattered most. Consecutive errors from the South Americans allowed Korea to move 20-18 ahead and they comfortably saw out the set despite the outstanding form of Venezuela captain Ernardo Gomez.

Lee Hyung-Doo met the sets of Choi Tae-Wong with impressive power in the second game, although it was the hitting of Gomez that helped Venezuela to a 20-17 lead. But Lee responded with a block, two aces and a spike to regain the initiative and the set for Korea.

Venezuela stuck to their task and managed to turn around an 18-21 deficit to claim the third set. Although they showed admirable fighting qualities in the fourth, fighting back from 19-22 down and saving two match points, they were unable to break down an inspired Korean defense led by libero Yeo Oh-Hyun as they slipped to their fifth defeat.

Comments:

"Venezuela are improving every day of this tournament. They are a very young side, but they have great athletic ability. They have very good jumpers and they get great height at the net. They are a team with great potential. But today our players performed very well. I was a bit worried after losing the third set, but we regained our concentration and were able to win the match."
CHA JOO-HYUN
Head coach, Korea

"I was very impressed with a very good Korean team and their defense. We made too many mistakes in the second set and although we came back well in the third we were unable to maintain the pressure on Korea. It made it a very exciting match for the spectators but unfortunately a disappointing loss for us."
MIGUEL CAMBERO
Head coach, Venezuela

"The Koreans' strength lies in their fighting spirit and never-say-die attitude. We fought until the very last point but sadly we were unable to win. It was a great game but a big disappointment for us."
ERNARDO GOMEZ
Venezuela captain
